World Animal Day

Happy World Animal Day!

Today, on October 4th, we are celebrating this beautiful day for all animals on planet earth.

Were you wondering why this important day is today? We've asked ourselves the same question!

It turns out that Heinrich Zimmermann chose this day to align it with Saint Francis of Assisi's feast day.

Are you wondering who that gentleman was as well (like us)? Saint Francis of Assisi was the animals’ patron saint.

And that is why Heinrich Zimmermann decided to use this day as World Animal Day back in 1925 (!).

Its purpose is to work towards a world where we recognise all animals as sentient beings.

For us at ALIVE, it is easily one of the most significant days in the year.

The mission of World Animal Day is to raise the status of animals worldwide and to improve their welfare standards.

They aim to achieve this by hosting various events to help and support animals.

For example, shelter open days & pet adoption events, awareness & educational events, and (peaceful) protest marches to raise awareness of animal welfare.

You can see if they host any events near you here.

Also, you can find them on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram

Together, we can make planet Earth a safer, and better place for animals.
